Because of the temporal separation of certain groups (like the southerners), there are various languages and dialects on Pern. Rather than invent a language, gentle abuse of Google Translate can be used when more than one language is being used in conversations!
If a conversation is entirely going on in a different language, just mark that at the beginning of the thread. It's only when two or more languages get involved that you should use the translated version (but feel free to include the translation, too!)
Northern Continent
Common Pernese is spoken across the entire northern continent. For the purposes of this game, Common Pernese is written as English.
Wherhandlers and whers have a spoken language, which is something of a pidgin composed of wher sounds and Common Pernese. In this game, when whers and wherhandlers are speaking Wher, use Estonian.
The Archipelagos (West and East)
The archipelagos are inhabited by smugglers and pirates, and the coalition also has territory in the western archipelago. Common Pernese is the lingua franca here.
The Southern Continent
South Run Weyr, being northerners, speak Common Pernese (aka English).
Orroans are often bilingual or trilingual. "Surface" Orroans, those who farm and herd, usually speak both Orroan and Common Pernese. "Mine" Orroans, who work the mine or are involved with wherhandlers, usually speak both Orroan and Wher. Some speak all three. Common Pernese is the trading language used in Orro. In this game, Orroan is written as Haitian Creole.
In general, the Wings use Common Pernese.
Ierne Wing has its own dialect / language. Iernian is written as Afrikaans.
