Candidate Application
Name: Zenel
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Undecided, probably heterosexual, will find out as he gets older.
Rank: Candidate
Location: South Run
Appearance:
Like his brother, Zenel carries the Istan-bred look with dark brown hair and near matching eyes. As he gets older his complexion has been darkening for he spends the majority of his time outdoors if he can help it. His hair is neat and smooth and generally kept short so he doesn’t have to worry about taking much care of it. He is an extremely lanky young man, wiry and willowy, and has yet to grow into any sort of musculature. He is generally a bit dirty, in the way of young boys and especially mischievous ones like him and more often than not has scrapes and bruises from rough play and adventures.
Zenel has been going through a bit of a growth spurt lately and hasn’t taken the time to try and get some new, better fitting clothing so most of what he wears appears anywhere from slightly small to quite clearly too small for him. They also tend to have rips and tears from catching on rocks and branches and what have you during his adventuring and rough-housing. His guardians in the crèche have found a few suitable new garments for him, but as he is older and less dependent than their younger charges, they have mostly left his clothing situation up to him. He has gone barefoot more often than not since he was very young and his feet seem to be permanently black with dirt for it, though they’re well toughened and stepping on sharp things doesn’t faze him as much as it seems it should.
Personality:
Zenel is quite the rebellious little thing. He rarely listens to a thing he’s told and likes to play pranks, especially on those that try to control him or tell him what to do. He’s very sneaky and often whisks himself away in the shadows when no one’s paying attention to go off and have his own little solo adventures, leaving his caretakers to worry after him with no idea where he’s gone. He’s very mouthy and stubborn and doesn’t quite care who he offends or backtalks. He hates being treated like a child and is not afraid to make his annoyance plain to anyone who would treat him in such a manner. He tends to be fairly apathetic, which can make him frustrating to be around.
He tends to show incredible ingenuity and cleverness in the pranks he pulls and as an escape artist. It seems he is quite intelligent, even if he often acts differently. He is good at solving puzzles, enigmas, problems in general, and enjoys it. He is very curious, like his brother, and quite fearless in his adventures and explorations. He likes to learn and discover new things, which is generally what spurs his adventures in the first place. He can be incredibly witty which can be amusing, though it often turns into sarcasm and scorn. He is very independent, which can be taken as good or bad, depending on the situation. He is very blunt and doesn’t sugarcoat his words; he’ll say what he means and doesn’t care how people might take it. If you want the truth you can be sure to get it from Zenel, though, afterwards, you might decide you didn’t want the truth after all.
Learning from a Harper is boring and in his mind, the lazy way to go about it. He’d much rather figure things out for himself; the journey to attain knowledge is sometimes more important than the knowledge itself. He has, therefore, skipped out on most his Harper lessons in favor finding his own way. Where’s the fun in having someone just tell you how everything works? Using your own brain, figuring it out yourself, is much more rewarding. In this he and his brother are also similar and his brother is the only one he will go to for help, because his brother will always give him just enough, and not too much. He does not want his big questions answered for him by anyone, but on occasion he just might need the right hint to point him in the right direction and his brother has a knack for doing just that.
He is one of the few who doesn’t seem unnerved at all by his brother’s state of mind. He knows how he is, he feels those waves of despair that emanate from the older man, but he neither pities him nor cares. His brother has no one except for him and nothing’s going to get in the way of Zenel spending time with him. Zenel is incredibly good at ignoring things that inconvenience him and his brother’s ‘aura’ is just another one of those things. Headstrong and stubborn to the end, Zenel’s willpower is a rather surprising force to be reckoned with for one so young. He will rarely back down from any challenge.
Family:
Synelle – Mother (Crèche worker, deceased)
Rusazen – Father (Journeyman Harper, deceased)
Syrus – Older Brother (Healer)
Background:
Zenel was second son to Synelle and Rusazen, younger brother to Syrus who once rode Blue Rmalkth. However, his mother did not survive giving him life and died only a few short hours after he was born, and so he never knew her. The last sane thing his father did before he died as well was to find a woman to care for him in his mother’s stead. He has been told his father drunk himself to death sometime in the turn after he was born, and so he never knew him either. His first memory of his brother was seeing him with his Blue and after a couple more visits he’d even gotten to go on a short ride with him. His brother would tell him about their parents when he came and tell him how he was certain they would have loved him so much if they still lived and to never forget that. He looked forward to visits from his brother more than anything; sometimes they would go flying on Rmalkth, and the Blue dragon would even talk to him!
Life was fairly uneventful other than that. He didn’t really make friends with the other weyrbrats, they all acted like babies if you asked him. Not that he didn’t try a couple times, but the ones around his age were always scared to go exploring with him, scared of getting in trouble; the younger ones well, they were younger and kind of annoying; the older ones never really wanted much to do with him he supposed for the same reason he didn’t want anything to do with those younger than himself. Whatever, he didn’t need them anyway. He had his brother, he didn’t need anyone else. He was just fine being on his own, there was no one to try and boss him around.
As he gets a little older, his brother starts telling him about how Thread was coming back after a really long absence, but the Weyrleaders didn’t believe it. He was a bit young at the time Syrus first started to talk about it and didn’t quite understand what it all meant, but shortly before his tenth turn his brother came to visit, told him to pack his things and that they were transferring to a new Weyr. It wasn’t until they had betweened away that Syrus told him where they were really going. That a group of riders that knew and believed Thread was going to return were forming their own Weyr so they’d be ready to fight it when it came. It would be the safest place for him because the other Weyrs were going to be woefully unprepared.
There weren’t really a lot of kids his age at all at the Hide, but it suited him just fine. His brother’s passion for this whole thing was almost infectious and he tried to help out at his new home wherever he could and learn more about what was going on. His brother seemed pretty busy helping out too and Zenel didn’t see him as often as he used to, but he was keeping himself busy too so it was all right. Then the attack came. His brother found him and was about to take him away from the fighting but then they were set upon by a large Brown that made quick work of the much smaller Rmalkth, though he did his best to defend his rider. Syrus lost it and there were tears in his own eyes as well. Another coalition rider came to their aid and beat back the Brown and his rider while a Greenpair pulled Syrus from Rmalkth’s body and ushered Zenel up onto his Green.
It was like a dangerous game of hide and seek after that, with riders from the other Weyrs flying over, searching for survivors. Then their new home was found and they began to settle there in relative safety. Syrus was withdrawn, despondent, most of the time, but Zenel spent most of his time with him anyway. He needed to move on, Rmalkth would be so disappointed him for moping around like that. He finally got mad at his brother and told him very bluntly what he thought Rmalkth would have to say about the whole ordeal. He wasn’t doing Rmalkth’s memory any justice moping and crying all the time, his dragon had died so he could live and he wasn’t even living!
After that he didn’t talk to or visit his brother again, until his brother sought him out about a month later. Until he started living again. It was shortly after Syrus rejoined the world that he was asked by a Greenrider if he’d ever thought about becoming a rider himself. Apparently her dragon thought he had potential. As a matter of fact he had thought about it, as most weyrbrats do, and he wanted it very much. Now he’s hoping that South Run’s riders will be able to steal some eggs soon because he would very much like to stand and Impress. When Thread returns, and he's sure it will and the rest of Pern is being really stupid, he wants to help destroy it.
Pets:
Name: Dazz
Species: Firelizard
Color: chimeric Brown-Blue
Age: 2 months
Appearance
This brown is a lovely creature. Elegant lines, a narrow muzzle, and sharp bony prominences mark him. He moves with a serpentine grace, and is nearly silent in his motions. Rich dark chocolate in color, with golden-brown dapples marking his haunches and belly, this fire-lizard would be a perfect specimen of his kind. Except. A splash of cerulean blue marks him, running from just above his left nostril to color around his eye and his left head-knob. A similar marking stretches from under his right foreleg in a wide mark on his belly into a narrow streak along his ribs, coloring his back-ridge on his haunches before ending. And a third blue mark runs along the underside of his tail to color his right tail-tip completely brilliant blue. This brown, it seems, is a chimera.
Personality
This fire-lizard is aware of how beautiful he is. He is fond of showing off -- riding his owner's shoulder, for instance, or wending his way gracefully just above the heads of a room full of people. He does require some labor, because he will beg for oiling and buffing every morning and evening, by trilling piteously and following you around with sad sad eyes until you give in and make his hide beautiful again. But, that being said, this brown is an excellent pet. He is very easy to train with positive rewards, such as praises or little bits of food. Due to his adoration of his bonded, he loves to be with them as much as possible, though he will obey when told to stay behind. He is, all in all, a pleasant, helpful, and quiet little friend to have perched on your shoulder or resting nearby!
