Candidate Tanta
Name: Tanta
Age: 12
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Still too young; mostly likely heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Appearance: Tanta took very much after her beautiful mother. Her locks are long, wavy, thick and pitch black in stark contrast to Raca's bright shock of hair. Their eyes are nearly identical, however, light bright blue. In Tanta's eyes could be seen speckles of hazel and gold instead of the green in her brother's. She also sports the same tan as her brother, but hers was more of a natural coloring, inherited from her mother's swarthy island skin. She is going to be short, a mere 4'5". She has almost reached her full height at only 12.
Her face is more almond or oval shaped, having taken some of her father's square jaw. Embarrassingly for her, she tends to break out in acne. Her brother's clear skin is definitely a sore point for her. Perhaps it is stress, because she tends to feel endowed by fate to monitor her brother's reckless behavior. She WAS born first out of the womb. Her mouth is cute, often pursed, but when she breaks into a smile it transforms her features, much like S'don's smile does for him. When Tanta smiles, the world bows at her beauty. She does have a scar on her forehead, slashing down through her eyebrow.
Small and willowy, Tanta is petite in every way, with the exception of her feet. They always seemed a few sizes too big. Later on, she will develop a pear figure, her weight landing on her hips as she matures. Overall, she presents a pretty picture, and a self-composed one at that.
Tanta picked up a love of henna and tattoos from S'don, much to the amusement of her mother. Though not as good of an artist as he, she begged him to teach her the art, and diligently applied herself to it's application. As she had no one else to help her with it, (Raca just laughed at her when she asked him too), she often tattooed her feet and hands, giving her a rather exotic look. Her choice in clothes also set her apart, and her father knew her love of red. He indulged her in pretty cloth when he had extra marks from his "business deals", and she was often adorned in reds of various shades. She even has a habit of painting her lips a brilliant scarlet. Her jewelry creations are always around her neck, ankles or upper arms.
Personality: Tanta is a multi-faceted, complicated girl. Moody, adventurous, more sensible than her brother, creative, honest and genuine, Tanta could wear many hats if she so chose. Creativity bursts out of her unconsciously, expressed in her dress, her sometimes melodramatic antics and her sense of adventure. She can't sing a lick, unlike Raca, but expresses herself in other ways. She loves working with her hands, and makes jewelry from seashells and rocks, carvess bits of wood into beads, and beg for glass beads as a gift from S'don whenever he is around. She would even gather flowers and weave them into long necklaces. A gift giver, Tanta doles these creations out as favors to those she likes, and withholds them from those who slight her or pay her no attention.
Tanta loves being the center of attention. She can be loud and sometimes obnoxious, and so tends to lead a group she is in. She hasn't grown up enough to become flirty, and pays boys very little attention at this point in her life. She has the inclination to become flirty to gain attention once her interest in boys peaks, but her sense of responsibility could also develop to temper that trait in the future, depending on what happens to her. She'll have to face that reality soon, because she is developing quickly into womanhood, an early bloomer.
Priding herself as the first born, Tanta takes it as her personal responsibility to keep Raca alive. Her twin is the most exasperating and exciting person in her life, and Tanta knows it. Her love for him ran deeper than blood. If she had not had him in her life, this sense of duty would probably have lain dormant. However, someone had to keep the fool from death by dragon, Headwoman or simple recklessness. So she learned to temper her own adventurous personality, to curb his. Thank Faranth she had been gifted with some patience and forbearance. But don't think she doesn't have a temper, and Raca feels the brunt of it most of the time. Her anger flares quickly, but dies quickly as well. In her heart of hearts, Tanta feels proud to take care of her brother, that same maternal instinct that perhaps led their mother to keep them to birth. Serving him gave her a sense of purpose, of meaning, in the absence of a loving relationship between her parents.
Tanta forms many acquaintances, but few true friends. She is relational and can be chatty and friendly, but when the mood strikes her, will sometimes withdraw for solitude and creative time. Her tendency to form deep bonds is a source of grief; she does not feel many are interested in forming that deep of a friendship. Perhaps someday she will find a true friend.
This thought often turned her towards the thought of Impressing dragons, of whom she was constantly around. Her view was more tempered than Raca's outright worship of the animals. She had a sense of the responsibility that would come with bonding with such a creature, especially if she was ever chosen by a Queen. She would shake her head at that thought. though No, a green would fit her better. More freedom. Less responsibility. Like her mother. She also had the same craving for adventure that her father did, though it was deeper, more defined, and with more caution attached. She knew she would Stand someday, as would Raca. Would they Impress together? She hoped so. The fool wouldn't know what he was getting into!
History: Tanta grew up in Ista Weyr alongside her twin brother Raca. The islands provided much exploring opportunities, and the duo were also the terrors of the Weyr. S'don wasn't around much to curb their behavior, and Tanta, their mother, simply laughed most of the time, her thoughts more on the next blue, brown or green rider in her bed, or the interests she had in trade. So the children took their punishments from the Headwoman and other weyrfolk assigned to taking care of the children destined for Impression.
Tanta missed none of this, and desperately missed her father while he was gone. She excised her mother from her heart, though she knew she took after her in many ways. A bit of wisdom lived in her from birth.
Days at Ista were often busy, as the Weyr had people coming and going constantly. There was swimming to be done, scrubbing Lath clean when S'don returned, chores assigned, and mischief to be made. Tanta enjoyed her time growing up in the Weyr immensely.
The mood changed though, as they approached 10 years old. Though S'don was tightlipped, the children heard rumors of Thread's return. Nothing could be secret for long on Pern. Raca would run around the beach acting out how he and his dragon would fight. Tanta had a much less glamorous view of a returning menace. Fear chilled her spine at the thought. But it couldn't be true, or the Queens would know.
When S'don disappeared, reportedly to High Reaches Weyr, Tanta tried to comfort her brother as best she could, though her own heart ached at the thought he had chosen to live elsewhere. Raca's deep assurance that he would return was met with skepticism at first, but a growing belief as she saw the change in his behavior. Putting aside her own doubt, she good-naturedly aided him in his watch, thinking that if it soothed him, what harm could it do? They would find the truth out soon enough.
At the sight of Lath's inky wings though after months of absence, her heart lept and pounded. Her palms started to sweat as they shoved possessions into their knapsacks, and padded silently down the corridors to the beach. All Tanta could think, as she was lifted up onto Lath with her father's strong hand, was that now, she was safe.
