Name: Raca
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Undecided
Rank: Candidate
Appearance: Raca sports a shock of sun-bleached blonde hair; almost white in its intensity. The strands are constantly at angles with his head, and cowlicks rule the day. In imitation of his father, he lets his bangs grow out and hang over his eyes, but he hacks off the rest of his hair at the ears. Long hair is just too troublesome when exploring or swimming. He is fair when his tan dies down, but most of the time he is a dark gold. skin color due to exposure. Dancing eyes are a clear, crystal blue, very light, with tinges of green on the edges. He shows the same tendency towards the bulkiness and height of his father, muscles showing promise of developing easily and thickly on his frame. He is a comely lad, with a heart-shaped face that he got from his mother and the full cheeks of his father. And dimples!
Personality: Always smiling and laughing, Raca is quick-witted, carefree and mischievous. He never passes up a chance for a joke or a laugh! Too often it is at the expense of others, but Raca is not insensitive to the effect. He is simply to young to know how to curb his attitude. The boy exudes charm and confidence, but is mostly unaware of it. He just knows that people have liked him his whole life, and it is pretty easy to get away with ANYTHING. Except for his mother. Now she was never fooled.
Raca had a tendency towards being a fool though. He didn't really think twice before he did something, and more often than not got Tanta and any other weyrbrat in trouble if they were involved and they all got caught. His escapades often involved bothering rider's dragons, playing pranks on the Weyrlingmaster, sneaking food from the kitchens, hiding Candidate's robes (but never just before a clutch; Raca wasn't that much of a fool), and on the list went. The weyrbrat of all weyrbrats, and most often the ringleader of exciting escapades, Raca needed a cooler head around him. Which Tanta exasperatingly supplied.
His father was a different story. Raca would never do anything to subvert S'don. In fact, Raca worshipped the ground S'don and Lath walked on, almost pathetically. He never felt resentment when S'don left, just regret and a wish that he could go. Every once in a while his father did take him out on Lath, and those times were like the sweetest treat that Pern could offer him. The thought that his father might disapprove would be the only thing that MIGHT stop Raca in his tracks.
A fiercely loyal soul, this boy loved dragons, loved the Weyr, and most of all loved his sister. He would die to protect her, and no-one dared cross her with him around. With Tanta, Raca let his philosophical side out, when it happened to bubble to the surface. He had Harper leanings, for all his desire to be a dragonrider. With a fine voice, he often sang to Lath when the dragon was around, but stayed away from the Weyr's resident Harper. He wanted nothing to get in the way of his desire to Impress a dragon like his father.
Family:
Father: Rider S'don of Brown Lath
Mother: Rider Tanta of Green Lilith
Twin Sister: Tanta
History: Born at Ista Weyr, Raca grew up knowing his mother and his father. His mother flitted from suitor to suitor as her green periodically rose in flight, something that Raca had a hard time understanding. So in the end his father was the stable thing in his life, as stable as S'don could be. If S'don was with women other than his mother, Raca didn't see it, or didn't care. His father could do no wrong in his eyes.
Lath was the next most important being to Raca, and the dragon sometimes bespoke him kindly, though it was rare. So Raca had some idea of what it would be like to be bonded, and his impatience for that day was unbearable sometimes. Lath often admonished him about his behavior and the exasperation of those who looked after him and his antics. Raca listened, tried to take the lesson to heart, but as soon as inspiration seized him for his newest escapade, the advice fled from his active mind. Perhaps someday it would stay!
And last but not least, Tanta was Raca's lifeboat, preserver, rock, lighthouse, guardian angel, confidante and most often co-conspirator. Tanta just tried to accomplish Raca's aims in a smarter, more efficient way than he suggested. It wasn't that she was any less reckless or prone to try something new and exciting; she just approached the adventure and problem differently. This sometimes led to screaming matches, but they generally figured out how to solve their differences in a way equitable to both.
As Raca approached 11, his father became more and more distant. There was something going on, but he wouldn't even hint at what it was to Raca, except for once. S'don had looked at Raca, smoothed a hand through his hair, and muttered, "I'll always come back for you boy. Keep an eye out for Lath's wings. You know how they look in the dark."
Raca had puzzled over this cryptic remark for a while, but soon forgot it in the adventure of living on the balmy islands. Until his father suddenly left for High Reaches Weyr a year later. Words couldn't express the dismay in the boy's heart that he didn't even get to say goodbye. His first experience of real rejection stunned him to the core, and his normally ebullient nature died for a few weeks. But he remembered what his father had said, and began to look for Lath's wings in the sky at night before they went to sleep. He told Tanta too, and though she laughed at first, when she saw how serious he was, she began to watch as well. She even went a step further and kept a bag packed for each of them, just in case S'don came for them.
And the night was not long in coming. Raca recognized the stealthy wings of Lath, and ran to get Tanta from the washing room. They slipped the last of their possessions into the bags, and stole out to see S'don. His words were brief, but shocking. "I'm taking you to a new Weyr to Impress. I'm glad you listened to what I said Raca. Let's go." The twins stared at each other open-mouthed, but quickly clambered onto Lath's waiting proferred leg, and took to the sky with their father, to Hidden Weyr and a new adventure.
