Candidate Application
Name: Calerin
Age: 16
Gender: male
Sexuality: bisexual (prefers women)
Rank: Candidate
Appearance:
Already standing at roughly 5’6, there’s a good possibility that Calerin will top out around the 6’ mark when he’s finally done growing. As it stands for now though, he’s got a ways to go yet. Aside from the possibility of his height, there isn’t much that really stands out about this young man. He’s rather nondescript, quite plain, and very average. His hair is long enough to hide his ears, get in the way and be shaggy, but not long enough to tie back or really do anything with except cut. It curls into large spirals, and is quite thick. Not even the color is all that remarkable though, a mix of golden-brown and red that looks dull even when clean. Despite the unfortunate dullness though, it’s always soft.
His eyes are somewhat large and spaced apart, and as a result they’re probably the first thing most people will notice about his face; wide and open, they’re the only remarkable thing about his appearance. They’re a shade of blue that is light, but brilliant despite the gray that’s also present. Depending on his surroundings, clothes, and the light, Calerin’s eyes can take on a more ocean-blue color or a cloudy blue-gray. His lashes are long but oddly light in color so they aren’t readily noticeable.
Typically his skin is neither dark nor pale, somewhere between fair and tan. He tans relatively easily, but if he spends a lot of time inside, he’ll become pale enough to burn. After the initial sunburn though, the blisters peel away to reveal skin several shades darker than it was before. As a result, he usually just tans after that, rather than burning. Calerin is built somewhere between slender and stocky; it’s a nice ‘in between’ build that means he’s got muscle, but is nowhere near bulky. What his build will turn out to be when he finally reaches adulthood though is up in the air.
The oddest thing people are likely to notice about Calerin is the scars that line the front of his neck. One is very fine and difficult to notice, but the other is a rather strange perfect circle on his throat. The scars don’t seem to bother him, and he’s willing to answer any questions about them that someone might have. However, the scars themselves indicate that whatever answer he gives will probably be unusual, as the injuries that caused the scars have rendered him completely mute.
Personality:
What really shines about Calerin is his personality. At first it might seem that this is just as dull as everything else about him, and many people have a tendency to assume that because he doesn’t (or can’t) speak, Calerin is a little on the slow side. This is simply not true, and anyone who spends time around him will quickly come to realize it; in the Turns since his injury, he’s come up with various ways of communicating with others, very few of which actually involve writing out his responses. But his is a quiet personality; he doesn’t often go out of his way to interact with others, although he’s not exactly introverted either.
Cal is definitely what most people consider to be ‘a nice guy’; even if he doesn’t make a habit of striking up ‘conversation’ with people, he is always willing to help someone who obviously needs it or asks. He’s generally caring and tries to look out for people less fortunate than he is. He’s also not afraid to stand up either for himself or for other people who won’t stand up for themselves. Despite his ‘quiet’ personality, he won’t hesitate to point out when someone is wrong or is being unfair or cruel. And he certainly won’t hesitate to speak with his fists if need be; he isn’t really a violent person, but Calerin refuses to let people use him as a doormat.
Although he’s typically patient, Cal does have a bit of a temper. It’s hard to get him to snap, but when he does he tends to do a lot of flailing and wild gestures. It is not hard at all to tell when he’s upset about something. Although he is usually polite and considerate, make no mistake that he is human, male, and perfectly capable of getting his feathers ruffled. As a result, he’s come up with several… interesting gestures to help express his opinions of certain situations. Very, very rarely, at the peak of frustration, he will occasionally throw/kick/hit inanimate objects.
Family:

Seral, father; 40
Background:
Born to a pair of farmers, Calerin grew up around animals and hard work. His father had gone into farmcrafting, and was a journeyman in his chosen Craft; his mother was actually a beastcrafter, also of journeyman status. The two of them were young when they met and fell in love, and they decided to start a family in a small cothold near Southern Boll Hold. Their firstborn was a boy; strong, healthy, and loud they named him Calerin. Like his parents, he grew to enjoy animals and spent much of his time around them. His parents began to teach him all that they knew, one basic at a time; he absorbed it like a sponge and his unusual patience earned the animals’ trust quickly.
He was still a young boy when his sister was born. Unfortunately for no discernible reason, she was stillborn. Whether it was a conscious decision or a physical effect from the difficult pregnancy and birth, they never had another child. Too young to understand at the time, Calerin kept holding out hope that someday he’d have a younger sibling. In the meantime, work kept him busy and distracted. They essentially lived on a farm and there was always some chore or errand to be done. For the most part the days came and went uneventfully. As time passed and he grew older, Calerin came to realize and eventually accept that he would be an only child.
When he came of age, the subject of sending Calerin to a Crafthall surfaced. It was an exciting prospect but he knew that every pair of hands was needed at home. So he hid his excitement and eagerness to go on to bigger and better things, and made the decision to stay home. His parents were surprised but given that he worked hard and efficiently and was a great help, they didn’t really press the issue. So more days passed like the ones before had: with nothing much of note happening. That all changed shortly before his thirteenth birthday.
There’s a certain risk that goes along with caring for animals. This was something Calerin’s parents had accepted long ago, and something that he himself was learning to accept and expect. There had been several close calls in the past but nothing serious. It didn’t seem as if it was meant to last, however. One day when a fierce freak storm blew up out of a clear blue sky everyone was rushing to get the animals into their proper shelters. Carelessness with one of the large runners used to pull heavy loads led to a plate-sized hoof crushing Calerin’s throat; the injury was severe and quickly became life-threatening as shock and swelling set in.
The healer did everything within his skill to save the boy’s life. And much to everyone’s surprise, Calerin survived and healed. But he would never be the same; the injury had caused severe trauma to his vocal cords, so much so that it had rendered him unable to speak. It actually took months for him to fully recover, but as soon as he was able he went back to doing the same old chores and errands. It seemed almost as if things wanted to go right back to the way they had always been but it was hardly possible now; his entire way of life changed. Calerin had to figure out how to express himself without his voice.
Normally always a quiet and considerate boy, Calerin was now prone to fits of frustration brought on from people being unable to understand his gestures or signs. The first time he threw an empty bucket across the yard had earned him some rather interesting looks. Eventually though, life did find an acceptable routine that worked. And eventually, everyone got used to his odd way of ‘speaking’ and came to understand him relatively well.
But yet again, things were destined to change. This time in the form of a dragon appearing from the sky. The rider said he was from one of the Weyrs and Calerin tried to recall if he’d heard of any clutches being laid at that particular Weyr, to no avail. He was curious, and when the rider beckoned him over and spoke to him about standing as a candidate, the boy was understandably dubious. Could he even be a dragonrider without being able to speak? But he wasn’t really given much time to think about it; apparently mistaking his curious silence for consent, the rider whisked Calerin onto his dragon and they were off and away. An instant later, he found out that the Weyr he was supposedly standing for was someplace else entirely.
He had been kidnapped!
