Candidate Application
Name: Nyssa
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Brown Weyrling
Appearance: The first thing that is noticed about Nyssa is her height, and her air of general authority that turns the eye as easily as any natural beauty might. Standing easily at 5'10”, Nyssa more than towers over most other woman she is used to being around, though is completely unbothered by it. Rather she plays her height to her advantage, adding to her aura of authority, whether it be false or not. Built to be slender, Nyssa is made up of graceful lines and a slim body, she could be called willowy – were it not for the bane of her existence. Any woman that bemoans about small breasts has obviously never had large ones that seem to get in the way of everything, and it's a personal annoyance of this young woman, who would give anything to downsize her own 'assets'. For all her annoyance over her body, however, Nyssa is not afraid to use womanly wiles to get what she wants.
Nyssa could easily be called beautiful, though attractive is really more accurate when taking into consideration the lines of her features, and the way her face is structured. She is perhaps rounder in the face than her figure would suggest, with round cheeks, and an oval face, but it by no means gives her a chubby appearance. Rather it softens the other wise hard features. Her eyes are no larger than normal, coloured a deep steely blue framed by thick lashes than rest on her cheeks - lightly dusted with freckles - when they are closed. Her skin is a naturally tanned colour, almost a pale olive in shade that gives her skin a faintly golden glow.
Her hair is the kind of dark brown that is impossible to pin down to a shade, whether it be black or brown is almost impossible to tell. Her one vanity, Nyssa wears her hair long, almost brushing her waist in a thick, wavy mess that would curl if it were to be cut shorter and the weight taken from them, but somehow the longer cut suits her as a shorter style never would.
Personality: Nyssa is extremely observant, it's hard to get anything past her when she's paying attention to what's going on around her. She would prefer to stay silent and watch the surroundings around her instead of joining in conversations, for she believes the best way to know a person is not to know them yourself, but rather to watch and see what strings others tend to pull. She'll watch someone for a long time before making contact with them of her own accord, and when she does, other aspects of her personality come about. Nyssa is observant yes, and makes a study of body language and facial expression, but this coupled with intelligence and a habit for attempting to manipulate people makes her someone that can at times, push tempers to the limit.
Nyssa is well aware that as a woman, she's not given the same kind of respect as a man is - this is a mistake. Nyssa is one of those people who believes there is little difference between a man and a woman, and sets out constantly to prove this. If there is one way to make sure she attempts a task, it is to tell her that as a woman it is impossible. She's hard headed and stubborn, refusing to give ground once it gained, and will take the time to gain that ground. Nyssa's stubborness is a subtle kind, she'll never forget a cause once she's started out on it, and while she may seem to relax her guard the opposite is true. Nyssa loves politics, the intricate games of gaining favour with the right people to get ahead in the world, and is not above doing what ever is required to play the game.
For all that she is rather friendly, Nyssa doesn't make friends easily, simply because she sees all people as puppets to move in a game or a dance. She's not above sacrificing someone else if it means putting her in a position to go further and rather than stick with people she likes, her company is made up of people that can do things for her. She doesn't make lasting relationships, everything is a business venture, or a move in a game, nothing lasts forever. She's patient and willing to wait for results to come about from small seeds planted. Nyssa is a planner and a plotter, thinking about the bigger picture rather than just the here and now and even the near future. Some plans may take turns to come to fruition but that's fine with her... She's willing to wait.
She's extremely ambitious, setting her eyes on the top position in anything she does, and is not afraid to push others out of her way to get there. Often she comes across as rather cold and aloof, but the reality of it is that she simply has better things to do than help others when she has places that she wants to go. She fits into most social situations, finding it easy to laugh and smile. She can act as friendly and concerned as she needs to in order to get what she wants, which is always the question when dealing with Nyssa: What does she want?
Family: Nyrial, 43 - Father
Sylina, 39 - Mother
Background: Nyssa was the first and only child of Sylina and Nyrial of Tillek, possibly because after raising the terror that was Nyssa in her younger turns, they opted for no more children. As a toddler, Nyssa was the typical young girl, but she was spoilt and manipulative, even at a young age. She used tears or tantrums to get what she wanted, and her parents, wanted to avoid those scenes and simply gave in. And Nyssa took it all in stride. She loved her parents, but they were easy to manipulate and that was something that Nyssa enjoyed. With other children, she worked to be the leader, always working towards that top position. Though holdbred, Nyssa had plans from an early age to make it to the top, whether that be finding a Lord Holder to marry or topping a craft.
As she grew older, Nyssa worked around her home with her mother, learning all those seemingly useless skills that women seemed to pride themselves on, while weighing up her chances of finding a craft that she enjoyed. Harpering was no good, she didn't have any skill with music, mining and metalsmithing was dirty work, and there was no hope of marriage there... So the list went on, with Nyssa continuing her usual life and loathing the fact that there wasn't something simple, but interesting to apprentice into. After the age of fourteen, she abandoned the idea of a craft and began looking around at the boys of the Hold - much to her father's disgust.
The Lord Holder had two sons, and that worked well enough for Nyssa, she could watch them both, and then simply pick one. It never came into doubt if it would work, Nyssa was never doubtful about her venture. To entertain doubt was to encourage doubt. The rumours of the 'alarmists' went through Tillek as surely as any other place, but Nyssa had little time or care for the rumours. Dragonriding was not her problem, it was someone else's problem, someone who didn't have as much of a future as she herself did naturally. She simply had to refuse any other offer that might come her way from the gentlemen of the hold while she planned and put her plans for the realisation of her ambition into practice.
Then search came from Ista when she was eighteen, when she was just about ready to start thinking about actually going ahead with her plans to attempt to marry one of the sons to Tillek. At first, the offer to come to the weyr was met with disinterest, and the question "what will that do for me?". She very well could be a Lady Holder in a few years, and here they were telling her that she should give it all up to sink lower in life than she was. Whatever reasons were given, they worked, along with the thought that if all else failed, she could return and simply pick up where she left off. In all honesty, her parents were glad to see her working towards another goal.
Naturally, once at Ista Weyr, Nyssa made her decision - she would aim for the gold, nothing less. Ever ambitious, every other young woman was met with a calculation of whether or not they might be a threat, and dismissed. She worked hard and constantly. Nyssa was one of a few kidnapped candidates from Ista when the eggs were taken, and while her initial reaction was to be indignant and angry, it passed. As long as they had a gold egg, and she had somewhere to aim, that was fine with her. Less girls to compete with in a way.

Dragons: Queen's Ransom Twins (brown)
Name: Belnioth
Age: Hatchling
Hatch Date: April 1256
Color: brown; #D98719
Description: Like his twin, Belnioth is a brute of a dragon. Barrel-chested, with a massively wide frame and bulk that could make a bronze dragon jealous, this brown is a surprising specimen among his siblings. At 36 feet in length when fully grown, he will outstrip his gold sister and a good deal of bronzes. His heavy, low-slung neck is reminiscent of whers and hyenas. Unlike many dragons, which will hold their necks gracefully arched, Belnioth prefers to keep his head low to the ground, swinging his massive wedge of a head to regard people on eye-level. It's quite unnerving, particularly when the dragon in question is quite as unattractive as Belnioth is. With a visible overbite and protruding fangs, those curious about draconic dentistry are going to be fascinated by this dragon. His "baby teeth" will never fall out, giving him a shark-like leer with the front fangs duplicated in a double-row, the small baby teeth just in front of (and forced forward by) the much larger adult teeth.
A color best described as "tawny," Belnioth's hulking form is muscled and powerful. He scars poorly, with any injury that mars the hide leaving visible marks for many Turns. Even more irksome for the dragon are his fragile talons, which are prone to flaking and cracking if they get too dry. Painting on sealant is one of the few remedies that will help, though lacquering his talons will be a laborious weekly job. At least his coloration is pretty, though: an even golden brown, with darker "points" on the tip of his muzzle, his feet, the tips of his wings, and the end of his tail. His body has very few other markings when he Hatches, save for a shadow along his spine and a dusting of frost-pale speckles along his shoulders. However, as he grows, his hide will bleach unevenly, giving him something akin to an overo pattern by the time he is two Turns of age. Though he will gain a few more pale speckles after that, no more massive changes in his hide will occur.
Personality: People who see Belnioth for the first time will often assume that he is some sort of killing machine, or one who is dedicated to the art of Threadfighting. Little could be further from the truth. Belnioth is convinced that he is Faranth's gift to mankind, and utterly perfect in every way. Weird teeth? What are you talking about? They're better for tearing into herdbeasts, which after all nourish his fantastic self. He's certain that he's the very best dragon ever to Hatch, and preens under the (clearly deserved) attention from others. Flattery is the way to get this dragon to do anything; punishment will completely fail to get his attention. Only positive reinforcement will get him to do anything, though if he figures out that he's being bribed, he will refuse to do whatever it is that you want simply on the principle of the thing.
Perhaps the best way to describe Belnioth would be as the privileged son of a Lord Holder. He will caterwaul when he is denied something which he is certain that he needs, no matter how ridiculous that seems to others. He and his twin together are trouble incarnate, for Paltanieth's allure and Belnioth's sense of command and right will manage to get just about anyone to do anything. They work together with frightening skill, attempting to bend everyone to their will. Only rarely will they clash, usually over a particular slave that one or the other wants for their own. Unlike Paltanieth, though, Belnioth is a complete diva, and will throw dramatic fits worthy of a spoiled Lord Holder's daughter, complete with wailing, flailing, and moans of how he is absolutely destroyed by this latest offense to his dignity. He is not loyal to any but his twin, who he loves above all, but he holds a proprietary interest to His. He does love them... as much as a creature like him can be expected to love another. Paltanieth he regards more as his second half than another creature, after all...
Name: Paltanieth
Age: Hatchling
Hatch Date: April 1256
Color: brown; #c44e00
Description: Pay no mind to the weird, scaly creature in the corner, now. This particular brown doesn’t look much like a dragon ought and neither does his twin. While they are both average size and possess the right amount of limbs (two wings, four legs, one tail), that’s about where the resemblance to most dragons ends. This brown and his twin are both wide and muscular, built for brute strength rather than speed and agility, which will make him very gifted at chasing Queens but more likely to falter and be left in a green’s dust. His wings are long enough to keep him aloft, and he’s certainly got a great deal of stamina for a brown, able to rival some of the smaller bronzes when he puts his mind to it, but speed is something that he lacks. Even when he tries his best, he’s never going to be as fast as most of his color, let alone the other chromatic-colored dragons, and that’s something that he and His will simply have to come to terms with. He’s also not all that graceful in the air, in part because his tail is a little on the chubby side and thus it doesn’t act as a very good balancing tool. That clumsiness is downright comical on the ground, too – watching him awkwardly bunny-hop around is likely to amuse most people at his expense.
A myriad of brown hues, Paltanieth is unmistakable for his color. His species is another story, though, for the base of his hide is literally ‘scaled’ in colors. Rather than be one solid shade of brown, it appears as though he has thousands of thumb-sized scales all over his body, with their base color a deep mahogany. The outline of each scale is a darker shade of brown, but there are high and lowlights in the colors that make them appear natural. The end result is to give Paltanieth a very textured appearance, particularly along his spine and ridges. The ‘scale’ pattern covers the majority of his body, ending only around his face, which is a solid shade of very pale brown not unlike cream-filled coffee – rich, warm and inviting. To watch him move is to admire the figure of a snake – serpentine and graceful, elegant and fine to behold. Bespelling. And not always in a good way.
Personality: Tempting is the serpent and Paltanieth takes this to extreme. From the way his mindvoice sounds (which is very light, silky and suggestive, alluring in its warmth and all-too-easy to succumb to) to the way that he arranges his words, everything about Paltanieth is temptation incarnate. He’s quite elegant to look at and listen to. If his appearance matched his personality, he’d be the Casanova of dragons. He loves to flirt and this will be readily apparent even at a young age – terms of endearment will be frequent from him, but it will be almost human in how he words things. Thank you, love. Hello, gorgeous. Good morning, beautiful. If you say so, darling. Everything that escapes his mind is downright silky and elegant to listen to and he isn’t shy about talking to any and everyone he meets. Friendly is Paltanieth, especially to the ladies – of any species. Charming and sweet, it’s completely easy to fall under his spell and that’s exactly his goal – he likes the attention. And if it gets people lavishing affection on him… even better.
One of his favorite things to do is collect. Specifically, he likes to collect young children or baby dragons, anything that can be easily influenced. You see, the sweet behavior is a disguise for manipulative tendencies that become readily apparent when he’s presented with easily-molded minds. His intentions are rarely cruel but he loves to be doted upon and feels that he deserves a group of worshippers. He also likes to try and play with others for responses, rarely with ill intent but often with comical side effects. While dragons do not often outright lie, Paltanieth is very good at twisting the truth to get amusing responses, so he might convince a baby dragon that the water is filled with the most delicious fish ever in hopes of getting that dragonet to bring him fish – and what’s the harm in that? It’s not wrong to want a lot of delicious treats, is it? Oh, well, if it is, he doesn’t want to be right
