Hidden is a literate semi-canon Pern role-play game.
This means:
literate - we write well. As in, we check for grammar/spelling and don't post one-liners. Shoot for a paragraph minimum-- you don't have to write a page but we need something to reply to. Just a note: Hidden is played in past tense.
semi-canon - we do not obey all of the rules laid down in Pern canon (that is, what has been written or approved by Anne McCaffrey herself). The site, however, is canon to itself; we will not randomly switch up the rules on you without good reason, explanation, and/or lots of planning.
Pern - we are set in the Pern world designed by Anne McCaffrey. It is suggested that you have read at least on of the Pern books before attempting to make a character.
role-play - we use characters in order to play. There's OOC (out-of-character) and IC (in-character) boards; please keep OOC and IC well separated, ie, no matter how pissed you are at player A, your character isn't going to hate their character unless IC reason is there, and vice versa.
game - we're here to have fun! This isn't super serious, guys. It's for playing. Don't go into a rage if you don't win a Flight, or don't get that shiny you wanted so badly. There's more chances. We try to be fair!
Hidden begins in the Fourth Interval in Turn 1256.
This means:
Fourth Interval - The Fourth Interval is the first Long Interval, lasting four hundred fifty Turns. Just about everyone believes Thread is gone for good or thinks that it is legendary. The Holds have expanded and Lord and Lady Holders have a lot of power. Crafthalls are somewhat important, but have little say in political matters.
1256 - The Interval is expected to end 1258, but nobody is entirely certain as no Long Interval has ever been recorded before. However, the Red Star is shining bright.
What this means in terms of people and draconids:
Lord & Lady Holders have immense power and supreme control over their land, including those Crafthalls which fall in their territories. All of Pern is subdivided amongst them. Fort Hold and High Reaches Hold are among the most powerful politically. Bloodlines are very important.
Crafters have rank, but not nearly comparable to that of those with noble blood. Most crafters remain at a single Hold after their first Turn of journeying.
Ordinary folk are spread all across the face of Pern. Farming and herding are very common, and wandering traders have inspired the building of many roads between Holds, even minor ones. Though most people build with stone for ease, sod houses and thatched roofs are common sights.
Dragonriders have little power, and trade labor and transportation in return for food and other goods. The Weyrs are in decline, and style themselves as Holds in order to claim their own territories. Most food in the Weyrs comes from territorial tithes (which are required by Pernese law to the Hold), not protectorate tithes (which are the customary right of dragonriders).
Firelizards vanished over a thousand Turns ago, and are little more than myths and songs. Every now and again someone claims a sighting, but they are believed to be a legend.
Whers are common across Pern and remain a respected part of society. Almost every minor Hold has a wherhandler and wher for night-protection, since highwaymen and outlaws sometimes attack the towns, and mines usually employ several. Un-bonded whers are dangerous but used by poorer holders, and are chained, with their wings clipped.
