Appearance: Balteren sticks out as one of the youngest candidates at Hidden Island. He recently had a growth spurt and reached a height of five feet even, and he certainly hasn't stopped growing. As a farm boy, he is fairly strong, but he still looks quite gangly. He hasn't quite grown into his longer legs yet. "Graceful" is not a word that anyone would apply to him at the moment. His face still looks very youthful, with round cheeks and smooth skin. Either he isn't as susceptible to acne as some kids his age, or it hasn't arrived yet. His light skin and dark hair clearly mark him as a native of Telgar. He keeps his hair short, but does not clip it all the way, leaving some messy pieces around his face. He has dark eyes too, almost black if he's in the right light. Balt couldn't care less about clothes, which is a good thing because he was only able to keep the ones on his back when the dragon came and stole him away.
Personality: Ah, the pre-teen years. Not quite an adolescent, too old to really be a child, but with all the sullenness and precociousness of both ages all wrapped up in one pint-sized package! Balteren is a constant whirl of emotion. Overly excited and hyper one moment, and then brooding and angsty the second something upsets him. He's a little spitfire, and not afraid to speak his mind. If anything, he's gotten more outspoken since he came to the Weyr. If a rule as big as not kidnapping people has been broken, then he doesn't see why he should have to follow any other rule.
He can be surprisingly cynical for a 12 year old, but then again, being kidnapped lends you a certain sense of...realism. Even so, the kid has a sharp tongue, and he'll use it on peers and superiors alike. Balteren does not really "play well with others." He has a certain sense of superiority to other kids his age, produced by his privileged upbringing and his life as an only child. If someone treats him patronizingly, he gets really upset.

Father- Tavelin, Holder at Telgar Hold
Background: Balteren was born in Telgar Hold. His father is a third cousin twice removed (or something like that) of the Lord Holder, and as a member of the blood, he had a privileged upbringing. His mother died in childbirth, but Balteren did not lack for aunts to help care for him. His father was always distant, having been deeply affected by his wife's death, but again, there were plenty of other father figures around.
His childhood was rather uneventful. He was well cared for and well fed. Balteren didn't always get along with the other kids--he thought he was smarter than them. He spent a lot of time playing alone, reading books or getting into mischief.
He never expected a dragon to appear in the sky, swooping down to steal candidates. The Searchrider told Balteren that he had been Searched. Naturally, his father refused to send the boy, so the rider scooped him up and flew away.
